My Router Hates Me
Sometimes you just have to look at yourself and laugh. Last night I
laughed and so did the technical support guy. Let me take you back. I
have been setting up a web server at my house. This involves switching
over my internet connection and even getting a new router because they
are giving me 5 static ip addresses. Let's just say that I have had
problems this past week. My first problem involved telling the new
router the wrong information. I mistakingly said my computer was the
internet and the internet was my computer, then I told the router that
it was the internet and the router quit talking to me(that's as layman
as I can get it). So at first try I hosed my new router and now they are
sending me a new one. While I am waiting for that to get here I decided
to hook up my old, working router. I did that and was on the phone with
technical support for an hour because even that router wasn't working.
During this time everyone under the sun decided to call me and the tech
support guy heard mom leave a message,"Brian, I haven't talked to you,
give me a call." and he chuckled. But I was determined to get this
problem fixed. Finally he had me connect directly from my computer to
the internet, thinking that would work, but it didn't. He was stumped.
So he said he would talk to his own technical support guy and call me
back. He then calls me back after 10 minutes and says,"go to the wall
and look at the cable, then follow it to your computer." I went over and
said,"doh, I can't believe it." and laughed and he laughed and we both
knew what the problem was. I connected the wrong cable. I have 2 blue
network cables and 2 black ones. I connected a black one, when the blue
one was coming from the wall. I am sure my story is now making the
rounds at the tech support place. I suppose it isn't as bad as the women
who used her CD Rom drive as a coaster or the women who called support
when there was a power outage or the women who used her mouse as a foot
pedal. So I at least have net access at home again. Live and learn. I
swear, I know how to work one of those new-fangled computer thingys.
