The Changing Planet

I'd like to say Congrats to my wife's cousin who just had a baby. It is a girl named Riley who weighed in a very small 2 pounds 2 ounces. She was born 10 weeks early. She is breathing on her own so that is a very good sign. Prayers are welcome. It kind of takes me back to when Brennon was in the NICU when he was first born. It can be nerve wrecking going to the hospital every day and worrying about him. I was glad he was there for only a week. I can't imagine having to stay there for 2 months. His medical bill was like $28,000 for being in the hospital for one week. But because both me and my wife had two insurances it covered it all. I wonder how much it would be if we didn't have insurance or had to stay for 2 months?

Holly's current job is to teach, or babysit, 4 to 6 year olds who are developmentally delayed. It is interesting to hear how they will hit her and run around the room babbling. As a teacher she cannot legally do anything to discipline them. Even though those kids are delayed they still need discipline and alot of the mothers don't do it. It makes her think that alot of these kids will become institutionalized when they grow up because they aren't being taught to respect people. Parents have to do that. Some of the kids are blind. Others are deaf and most have low IQs. Some have to be spoon fed, fed through a tube and some are not even potty trained. Her job to me sounds like a babysitter, but I think to myself, a majority of people could not stomach that kind of job. I know I couldn't. I have a great admiration for what she does.

I am getting better at changing Brennon, but now that he is on solid food it starts to smell more. I haven't yet had to break out the scuba mask, but I can see it in the future. I remember hearing how back in the day dads didn't do anything like that. Nowadays if you don't change your kid you are thought of as uncaring. There are two moments in caring for a child when you get the biggest smiles. The first one is when you visit them in their crib when they are waking up. They look at you will those big eyes and smile and giggle. The second is putting them on the changing table and they look at you with those big eyes and smile and giggle. That's the best part. Now the rest, well, he'll grow out of it.
